From a distance, our balloon may remind you of a traditional hot air balloon. But the way it gets into the sky—and stays there—is very different.

Instead of using heated air and traveling wherever the wind takes it, the Live! On Air Fallsview Balloon Ride uses helium for lift and a secure tethering system to remain connected to the ground. A controlled winch system guides the balloon during its ascent and descent, creating a smooth vertical sightseeing experience above Niagara Falls. So, what is actually happening when you see the balloon rising into the sky? Here’s a closer look.

1. Helium Gives the Balloon Its Lift

The first part of the equation is helium.

Helium is lighter than the air surrounding us. When an enormous balloon is filled with enough helium, the difference in density creates buoyancy, allowing the balloon to rise.

Why Doesn’t a Helium Balloon Need a Burner?

Traditional hot air balloons use propane burners because heated air becomes less dense than the cooler air outside the balloon. The pilot periodically fires the burner to maintain or increase lift.

A helium balloon works differently.

Because helium is already lighter than the surrounding atmosphere, it naturally provides lift without needing to be continuously heated.

2. What Does “Tethered” Mean?

The word tethered is one of the most important parts of understanding how our balloon operates.

A traditional free-flying balloon leaves its launch site and moves with the wind. Where it eventually lands depends on air currents, weather conditions and the route of the flight.

Our balloon remains connected to the ground by a heavy-duty tethering system throughout the flight.

Think of that familiar helium balloon again. The helium makes it want to rise, but the string in your hand prevents it from floating away.

The concept behind a large tethered balloon is similar, although the engineering is obviously far more sophisticated. Instead of a piece of string, the attraction uses a specialized cable and ground system designed to control a passenger-carrying balloon.

Because the balloon stays tethered, the experience is focused on moving up and down above one location.

3. A Winch Controls the Ascent and Descent

That’s where the tether and winch system come into play.

The cable connecting the balloon to the ground works together with a powerful electric winch. When it’s time for the balloon to ascend, the system gradually releases the cable. The helium provides the upward lift while the tether controls how far the balloon can travel.

Once the balloon reaches its operating altitude, guests have the opportunity to take in the scenery from above.

When it is time to return to the ground, the process works in reverse. The winch gradually reels the cable back in, guiding the balloon toward its launch area.

In other words, the winch isn’t lifting the balloon into the sky like an elevator motor lifting an elevator car.

The helium wants to take the balloon up. The winch controls that lift.

It is a simple idea at its core, but that combination of physics and engineering is what makes a tethered helium balloon such an unusual sightseeing experience.

4. Where Do Passengers Ride?

Guests don’t ride inside the balloon itself.

Below the enormous helium-filled envelope is the gondola, which serves as the passenger viewing platform.

5. How High Does the Fallsview Balloon Go?

7. Why Is the Balloon Weather Dependent?

One of the questions we hear often is: If the balloon is tethered, why does weather still matter?

Because even though the balloon stays connected to the ground, it is still flying hundreds of feet into the atmosphere.

And the atmosphere can change quickly.

The balloon has an enormous surface area, which means wind is especially important when determining whether conditions are appropriate for flying. Strong winds and gusts can place additional forces on the balloon and tethering system.

Thunderstorms and other changing weather conditions can also affect operations.

That’s why you may occasionally visit Niagara Falls on what looks like a beautiful sunny day and see the balloon temporarily grounded.

Sunshine doesn’t always mean ideal balloon conditions.

Wind at higher elevations can be different from what you’re feeling while walking at street level, and conditions can change throughout the day.
